Instructions
Pairs well with the Bok Choy Garlic Stir Fry [蒜蓉油菜]
The Beef
- In a mixing bowl, combine 2 Tbsp. cornstarch, 1 tsp. baking soda*, 2 Tbsp. water and 2-3 garlic clove until smooth.Proceed to cut into 3 inch strips the 450 g boneless round steak and toss in the mix. Use your hands to gently cover the strips with the mix.Why add baking soda? Baking soda helps tenderize the beef but also creates a desirable texture when stir-frying.
- In a large frying pan over medium-high heat, stir-fry beef mix in 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil about 10 minutes or until beef reaches desired doneness. Remove and set aside.
The Frying
- Stir-fry 1 yellow onion in the remaining 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil for 5 minutes or until softened.Add the 300 g broccoli florets and cook for 3 minutes until the broccoli is tender but still crisp. Return beef to pan.
- In another mixing bowl, combine 3 Tbsp. soy sauce, 2 Tbsp. brown sugar, 1 tsp. ginger and remaining 1 Tbsp. cornstarch and 1/2 cup water until smooth. Add to the pan with the beef and brocoli and let it cook while stirring for 2 minutes.

I added double the amount of ginger since it’s a fan favorite in my family and I didn’t feel like 1 tsp was enough. It ended up being too spicy for my daughter. I wish this warning was added to the recipe.
Warning: too much ginger will affect the taste and make it too strong! Thanks Rachel! ❤
Delicious, but please please please do not throw away the brocoli stem 🙏🥦. It is just as tasty, full of nutrients as the florets and is better off in your stomach than in the trash.
